Rainbow Cichlid
(Herotilapia multispinosa)
Common Names: Rainbow cichlid, Golden Red-eye cichlid.
Size: 3-4 inches. Some have been known to reach 5-7, but this is quite rare.
pH: 6.5-8.0
Temp: 69-86 Fahrenheit, 21-30 Celsius.
Tank Region: Middle-bottom
Origin: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras
Gender: Male is larger with longer and more pointed anal and dorsal fins.
Notes: It's one of the most peaceful cichlids. It's also non-competitive, which means it can be in semi-aggressive tanks as well as peaceful. It's an omnivore and not a fussy eater. It prefers a sand substrate. It can live up to 9 years. They vary in color dramatically. It doesn't usually burrow. They need at least a 20 gallon long for one.
Edit: As of 2015, this fish has been renamed Herotilapia multispinosa, again, after it had previously been Archocentrus multispinosus.
