I'm trying to design a racking system for my fish room. I'm mostly looking to have 10-gallon aquariums on edge. My initial thoughts are to create 20" * 50" boxes out of 2*4 with a 1/2" plywood top for each shelf and then attach them to uprights with carriage bolts. Will this be strong enough using only the plywood to prevent racking? I like the idea that this leaves me a box to install lighting into.

I'll likely add larger tanks in the future, but I'm intentionally trying to focus on nano species. It's an artificial constraint, but I would rather have double the tanks at a smaller size. I may use 20's but I would still want to set things up the same way with the tanks edge-on in the rack. and the entire shelf lit with a 48" fixture.

Ah. Yes I figured your were maxing w 10 vs. 20, but had not considered the nan fish idea. Nice! Good luck! Hopefully someone with fish room experience can chime in. :)
