Quieting a Whisper Filter

Hi all,

I just set up an aquarium with the Whisper 10i-- it's quite noisy for having "whisper" in the title. It makes a grrrr sound, so I cleaned and then lubricated the impeller with Vaseline. It was nearly silent for about a minute before going back to making its noise again. Are there any other ways you'd recommend fixing a noisy filter?

Thanks!

I had this same issue. TBH they are junky filters. I quickly replaced it. I also tired to quiet mine. You could try another food grade lubricant for the propeller but I would honestly recommend just getting a new one. The other issue is had was with media in it, it would flow out of the filter near the intake before going through the media, rendering it almost useless as filters go.

I like the aqueon quiet flow filters as well as the Marineland penguins. Both nice and quiet. Tetra sells whisper air pumps which I also like if you wanted to go with a sponge filter.

Think it’s just luck. My first one after a few months was very loud, got a new one and it’s quiet. Same with the whisper air pump. I returned my first one asap because it was obnoxiously loud, louder than my other one, but just bought a new one today that’s quiet.

The key to having quiet air pumps is placing them on a towel under a tank stand. That’s what’s worked best for me at least. I’ve owned the whisper 10 and 20 and both have been quiet once I do this.

I placed my non-tetra air pump on a towel and it made it bearable, but my new tetra whisper is almost silent! No towel, it is level with the base of the tank.

Consider buying a Top Fin Silenstream 20 filter. They are usually on sale for $15 at PetSmart. Silentstreams in my experience are very quiet.

There is a sticky'd thread in the filter section regarding how to use DIY media to make these cheap filters perform a lot better.

I have both this one and OPs, I find they are both equally quiet. Maybe the issue is either in what media is in the basket, or the way the impeller sits.. have you tried spinning it around by hand, or running it out of the whole set up in a bucket of water to see what it looks like/if it still makes the noise?

I'd just like to update myself on this thread. The new whisper air pump WAS silent for maybe a day, but almost immediately is now very loud and obnoxious just like the first one I tried.
