I currently have a u2 filter in my 16gallon tank, and fancy upgrading it to the u3 as that would filter my tank 10times per hour. Can I change the media from the u2 to the u3 without affecting my beneficial bacteria?

It shouldn't be a problem! Just don't let the media dry out.

I was planing on draining some tank water in to a large bucket and changing the media from one filter to the other while submerged just to be extra cautious, then putting the new filter with the old media back in the tank. Hopefully I'll be able to add extra ceramic media to the new filter as it seems to be larger in size.

    Sounds like a good plan!
