Quick q about sponge filters

Hi guys!! Quick (maybe dumb) question—I have a sponge filter in my quarantine tank, and I’m wondering—do you think it will run the same/still work if I pop off the lid thing as I did in the picture?? I don’t see why it wouldn’t work like this but just wanted to confirm. I have a VERY rambunctious yoyo loach in QT who’s new favorite hobby is wedging himself thru the small holes on that lid so he can hide in the sponge filter, and I’m just nervous he may get stuck in there since the openings are so small so I figured I’d just pop off the lid so he has a less sketchy entrance point!
Thanks :)

Erm the tube part is missing you mean? I thought it needed the tube to create suction and draw water in through the sponge?

Not sure maybe mine is different

If hes trying to hide in the sponge filter I would try turning the lights down some and giving him more places to hide in.

Honestly, you may be right. TBH sponge filters have always lowkey confused me.. I’ve never used the tube part for some reason (not sure why ??) so if that creates suction to make them work I guess I’ve just been running them as glorified air pumps this whole time ??? LOL!! I have a mini HOB working as well on this QT setup so I’m not too concerned.
Thanks so much for the replies!!! Although the yoyo doesn’t have a light rn in QT and does have a lot of hidey-holes (I think) he will be moving on Monday to my main planted tank which has tons more fun hiding spots for him to explore (And no sponge filter for me to get stressed about )!! Can’t wait to see how he reacts, he definitely seems to have a big, curious personality!!

Sounds like your loach is gunna love his new home after QT :)

The tube part is needed to create lift and draw water in through the sponge at the bottom. So yeah without the tube it won't filter as such.
