Questions on moving to a 55 Gallon tank

Well I finally got my 55 Gallon tank just need to give it a nice cleaning and get my Substraight, and a couple small things like my air stones and light. I have Aqueon Quiet Flow 55/75 as well as a Aqueon Quiet Flow 30 on my 20 gallon tank. My question is after I do my Substraight can I just move the filters to the new tank and move my fish? Trying to keep my cycle going. Going to move all the fish into the 55 till I get a new filter and will then use the 20 for a qt. Just trying to figure the best way to transfer my fish while keeping the cycle. Any help is appreciated

I'm in nearly the same situation, so I'm eager to read responses as well.

Make sure your water temperature and Ph match before moving the fish, but yes you can just move everything over. I recommend dosing prime and stability daily for 3-5days as a safety precaution to even out any parameter swings while everyone settles in.

Agreeded ^ add SeaChem Stability. I would do this for at least a week. You really can not overdose.

I don't think using the 30 gallon filter for the 55 gallon is a good idea. It's not strong enough for the aquarium.

In the past, I've used a filter made for a 10 gallon tank on a 20 gallon and it broke down the next day....

He also has the 55/75 quiet flow. He has plenty of filtration

Well I read that he was planning on moving both filters on the 55 gallon so he could keep the cycle going.
What I'm saying is using the filter made for a 30 gallon tank on a 55 gallon might be a bad idea.

Made for 30 gallon essentially means it moves enough water to provide adequate filtration for a 30 gallon tank. You could stick it in a pond and it would work fine.

Edit, not that it would actually be useful in a pond, but it would move water

Years ago when I very first got my 55 I already had 2 cycled 10's. Both had filters designed for much much bigger tanks. I moved everything from both 10's (deco, gravel, plants, filters, water and fish) and my cycle for the 55 was instant. Of course I had to add 30 gallons of dechlorinated water matched to what my fish were used to, to fill it up so basically it was just like doing a large water change.

Yours should go without a hitch.

Thanks for all the info. Trying to figure out the substrate to use and ill be on my way. I'm thinking pool filter sand mixed with pea gravel. I will eventually get another filter and replace my aqueon 30..thinking a Aquaclear 110. Then I'll have my aqueon 55/75 and a Aquaclear 110. Will be moving most my plants as well. I super excited and my gouramis will be stoked as well as my other fish. Thanks for the help and any other help is appreciated! ☺️
