Questions On "baby Betta" Care

Hey guys, so as you may know from my previous posts, I have a five gallon tank with a betta fish and an african dwarf frog. I decided that I want a second betta and placed a divider into the tank. So I went to Petco (I know big chain pet stores are bad, I'm sorry!) and came across "Baby bettas". They were so cute and tiny and I became impulsive and picked one up and figured I'd research baby betta care when I get home. But when I got home, I could barely find any info on caring for BABY bettas. I've been feeding him tropical fish flakes since I read you can feed them that. And he's been eating it fine. But anyone here know about young betta care? Thanks!

Okay so 1st I absolutely don’t recommend you divide the tank since this other Betta is an unknown sex (what they say is not true) and with a ADF they need a minimum of 5Gallons. 2nd NEVER feed betta’s flakes it’s eaiser for them to get bloated when fed flakes instead feed them Betta pellets but they shouldn’t be the only thing you feed them. A healthy betta’s diet should consist of pellets and either brine shrimp or bloodworms (live, frozen, or freeze dried) so you kinda have two choices 1. Get another tank for the baby or 2. Give him/her back

Big store bettas aren't bad. Most people just don't like going there as it tells the store to keep treating their bettas badly. Baby bettas are like normal bettas except you feed them more nutritious food like frozen and live. They are also more sensitive to cold so make sure it at 79 or something. Maybe you could try to get another 5 gallon or a 3.5 as when it is divide the bettas only have 2.5 gallons of space. FishFor2018 I disagree I think flakes are fine as there basically the same as pellets just flat

Hey thanks guys. Yeah I've heard that the gender is mostly likely unknown since they're really young. But since I'm not doing a sorority or anything, it didn't really matter what gender I got. And second, I thought 2.5 gallons was the minimum for bettas? At least that's what I've read. And I also read that ADFs can even be in one gallon but Idk maybe you guys are right. Since I live an hour away from my petco, I might give the baby to another fish store close by.

I agree with some of what fishfor2018 said, the juvenile betta is of an unknown sex as they are sold to young to properly sex, so they shouldn’t be in a divided tank for that reason alone. The tank the juvenile is in will also be overstocked with having him, the other betta, and the adf. The juvenile needs a tank with a temp between 78-82 that’s cycled with adequate hiding space and regular waterchanges, just like any other splendens. I do not suggest it to be divided until the juvenile is of adequate age to be sexed properly. Flakes should be ok, just make sure not over feed and it’s best to soak the flakes to help prevent any bloating. This being said, a juvenile will do best with a more higher nutrition diet like frozen or live foods to help with quicker growth. More frequent waterchanges will help with this too.

A 2.5 is the bare minimum, but for a divided tank is 10g, to give the bettas enough space to their own as well as the fact several bettas in a small tank can mess with the bioload, as well as the frog. Adf’s require a minimum of 5 gallon and should be in a group of at least two.

Another reason as to why you do not want an unknown gender in a divided tank is because when you keep males and females together in the same tank it can cause health problems with the female, including eventual death because of them. Females when separated from a male but can still smell/see them can become eggbound causing major issues and if you keep them together without a divider they are very likely to kill eachother.

Thank you, I didn't know females could be egg bound by being near a male! Well I just gave the betta to a local fish store Kinda sad but it's what's best. Hopefully the person who buys him will take good care of him! Thanks again guys.
