I just picked up this betta today! All I know is that he is a half moon dumbo male. First, does he look healthy? Any finrot, etc. I’m pretty new with ID on bettas so I want to make sure I get this right. Also, are there sorts of “variations” of bettas? Just curious.
Here he is!

I can’t tell if there is any dropsy or not. Tell me if o need to take any more pics.

He looks healthy to me! No fin rot or dropsy. I like dumbo-ears a lot!

There are massive amounts of betta variations -- tail type, color, personal markings, etc.! And your fish looks pretty healthy.

Cool! Do no dropsy? Also, is there a “pineapple” variation where the scales have a dark edge to them? Does he have that?

He looks relatively healthy and I am pretty sure he is a dumbo ear Delta tail not a Halfmoon. His colors are a bit dull but that is to be expected from a betta purchase led at a pet store. If you are really worried about him having parasites or anything you can do a round of general cure. Overall he looks good so just keep the water clean and feed him high quality pellets and frozen food.

The cup lid said he was half moon. But maybe they were wrong.

Sometimes they claim deltas or super deltas are halfmoons bc halfmoons are more desirable. Although when kept properly a delta or super delta can develop such large finnage it’s hard to even tell.

If he is a halfmoon it is just barely, he doesn't really have enough branching to be a halfmoon, and he certainly is not a plakat.
A very nice cinnamon dumbo boy, nice find!

I’ll try to get some more pics later, but I think you are right.

Honestly, I am not sure on the color but not seeing pine coning. It could be stress from the changes and he will be fine and show his true colors - I am thinking more red once he is in his tank for a while. He is a nice looking betta btw!

He is probably at least five-six months old, most pet store bettas are around this age only because the youngest the get them is the baby bettas which are between 6-10 weeks old, the other more mature bettas are older.

How long do they usually live, having been purchased from a chain store?

The oldest one I have had was 2.5 years old when he passed due to illness - others have had theirs for even longer than that, there is even a member on here who has a betta that is 7 or 8 if I remember correctly.
