Questions About Kuhli Loaches

Hello all,

I am considering getting a group of 10 Kuhli loaches for my 29 gal and have a few questions.
1. Is a group of 10 big enough to make them comfortable? I am worried about them being so shy that I never see them.
2. Are your Kuhli loaches very shy? I’m worried I’ll never see them and don’t want to waste my money.
3.What is the best temp to keep them at? Would 77F be ok?

Thanks everyone

IMO, The answer to all your questions is "Yes". Just provide plenty of hardscape to help them feel secure, then the K. Loaches should become more active.
If you want to keep a more hyperactive loach, consider growing out a few Yo Yo's. I'm currently growing out four baby YoYo loaches. Never a dull moment.

Thanks for the reply, yoyo loaches are pretty cool but I’m pretty set on the Kuhlis for this tank
I am planing on heavily planting this tank so if the bioload is manageable I’ll add even more Kuhlis

Sounds like a good plan. I'm a big fan of Loaches.

My khuli loaches are active. Even when they aren't swimming around, they will hang out in the open where i can see them.

Keeping them in a group and providing lots of cover and hiding places is key.

I've got some anubias plants, pieces of drift wood and terra cotta pots in our community tank providing lots of cover for our khuli's.

I think your plan of 10 khuli's for your tank is good.

They can be shy, but if you make them feel safe by providing shelter for them throughout the tank, they should be very sociable.

Hi, I bought 9 back in January 2 died right off but the 7 are thriving. They have successfully spawned once and I now have 13 babies. I just found a bunch of new eggs so I'm hoping maybe I'll have a new batch. 10 is perfect! Mine are always active and glass surfing. I hope you have fun with them!

I'll be honest, I have a much smaller group of kuhlis than is recommended.

I often get heat for it, but I'll be honest-

My two boys are amazing! Some of the most active loaches I've ever seen. I only have the pair of them in my 40, yet I see them constantly.

They are very active, playful, and full of personality! They love to cuddle and take naps draped over plants... (it scares me sometimes! lol)

They eat well and are some of my absolute favorite fish that I've ever owned.

To answer your questions- Yes! They are so much fun to own.

Thanks for the reply, I’m definitely going to go ahead and get them

I was donated one. It disappeared down my undergravel filter and I never saw it again!

My brother had some in a heavily planted community tank and they were out crawling in the plants and could be seen.
