Questions about Eco Complete

StickyRice

I'm creating an aquascape and I want a pool filter sand cap to make it look more natural and to save my wallet. I just wanted to know if this was a good idea or not. Also, I'm confused about the CEC of Eco complete. Some sources said that it had really high CEC and some claimed that it had none. Does anyone know which one is true or not. I also want to know if I have to replace eco complete at all. Originally I was going to get Seachem flourite sand but I thought it was too expensive so I wanted to try out eco complete. Finally, are there any cheap aquarium substrates that anyone knows about?

Eco complete is basically expensive inert gravel.

Personally i prefer an aquasoil as its easier to rescape but if you want a cap with sand topsoil or organic potting mix is probably your best bet.
