Questions about Blue Velvet Shrimp

So I recently got 7 Blue Velvet shrimp to go in my 10g tank. It’s been about a week since I’ve gotten them and they all seemed to be happy, a few of them molted. Today I woke up and see one of the shrimps has died. It is a planted tank so I do use some fertilizer for it. I use:
Easy Green
Seachem Root Tabs
I only use a small amount. Are these going to hurt the shrimp? Also I was thinking of getting some Seachem Flourish Excel to help my plants a little. Will that hurt them if I only dose minimal amounts?
Any advice would be welcome. This is my first time keeping blue velvets and I DON’T want them to die. Also tank parameters are normal. Nitrates are a tiny bit high but I’m doing a tank cleaning and partial water change today so that should go back down. Tank has been fully cycled for years now so I know that’s not an issue either.

The fertilizer shouldn’t be hurting the shrimp. What are your water parameters and gh and kh? And how long has the tank been established

Tank has been established for about three years.
Gh: 25ppm
Kh: 180ppm
Nitrates: ~20 (a little high but I’m doing a water change today)
Nitrites: 0
Chlorine: 0
Ph: ~7.2

  • The parameters sound okay, though you didn't list ammonia. With a long established tank I doubt it's a problem, but it's possible. Do you have a way to test for it?
  • The Easy Green is okay, but I've never used the Seachem root tabs. I assume they're okay, but I don't know for sure.
  • I've used Seachem Excel in my shrimp tanks and haven't noticed any problems. Do you have some algae you're wanting to get under control, or do you plan to use it routinely long-term?
  • Losing one or two shrimp when introducing them to a new tank, while unfortunate, isn't out of the ordinary (at least for me). Did you drip acclimate them for an extended period when you got them?

I do not have a way to test for ammonia specifically. I was told that the nitrate/nitrite test would tell me what I needed to know as far as ammonia. I’m going to look into getting a better testing kit.
Yes I do have some algae issues I’m wanting to control, but I was told that dosing small amounts regularly could help the plants grow better.
The rest of them seem fine now, so I’m hoping it was just a fluke. I got them through the mail, and the package was delayed for an extra day so I didn’t drip acclimate for fear of ammonia poisoning. I just floated them for about 25-30 mins and carefully put them into the water with a net. They seemed fine after I put them in, eating and stuff. Some of them even molted a few days later.
