Question For Long Tailed Betta Owners

HI all,

So my question is for those of you who have longer finned Bettas. So I know that because of their long fins they might not have as easy of a time getting around compared to say a Betta with shorter fins. Also that they may need to take more resting time between swimming. My question is have any of you with longer tailed Bettas noticed days where they seem more active and other days where they seem more lazy? Some days my double tail Betta will be pretty active and other days he's kinda lazy. It's off and on and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their Bettas?

I have a regular fin male and 11 females and all mine are that way. Sometimes I will look into the tank and the way they are in the plant it's darn one died Go to get it out and it swims away. I have learned not to get too excited. Lol

Mine begs for food, eats, looks for more food on the bottom of the tank, rests, looks for more food on the bottom of the tank, rests, then repeats it all, and rarely, very rarely, when he's tired of resting, makes an attempt at blowing a bubble nest- then gets tired of it and rests some more.

I think the whole 'long finned Bettas have trouble swimming' thing is grossly exaggerated.

I agree after they have room to swim they build up strength.

It might be exaggerated but I do think it strongly weighs them down.

Probably depends on the Betta as well. My double tail is in a 10 gallon has plenty of room to swim but has always been less active than my Bettas with shorter fins. Don't get me wrong, when he wants to be he's like a bat out of h*ll but he's just generally less active..

yep most days my betta is active but there are days where he is lazy, it just depends on his mood and energy

yep he is a veiltale and has super long fins when he isn't playing with the filter intake or snail doesn't mistake it as food lol

Yeah I have a Veiltale too and he's a very active guy. He has pretty long fins too. My Double Tail just has fins all around his body so I think he's always had a harder time swimming(needs more resting time). I was thinking about getting my Veil Tail a snail. What kind do you have?

its possible that he is having a hard time because of his fins since it is a common issue with bettas. I have 1 mystery and 2 nerites with him currently, I do recommend getting snails since they are a lot more interesting then they seem lol

Too much current in the tank tires out the longer finned bettas, particularly halfmoons and the like. I had one that bit his tail off and never let it grow back, even though his tank had a baffle on the HOB filter.

My delta tail Huxfish is always lazy. Whenever I say hello to him he's usually lounging on the substrate or on a plant or on his little castle tower decoration. Sometimes he'll just be floating near the surface glancing at me and expecting food.

20170730_104104.jpg Huxfish has a loooong billowy tail that he nips all the time because he's also very fussy about his water temp, light exposure, and number of toys/shiny things put around the tank.

Thing is, he also builds gorgeous bubble nests, but I almost never catch him in the act of making them.

20170608_145147.jpg Is this his equivalent of working out?

He's absolutely vicious with his food though. Sometimes I'll drop a flake in the tank and he'll smack it with his head, stalk it for a few seconds, then jump up and tackle-grab it while kind of swinging it around until he swallows it.

I feel like it's not really a tail thing, but more of a temperament thing.

Yeah I know what you mean. Trust me I've spent so much time trying to baffle the filter to his liking. Right now I think I got it where he likes it but he went through a faze of tail biting.. He doesn't do it so much anymore and I hope it stays like that. It's heartbreaking to see them damage their beautiful fins.

Huxfish sounds very similar to my Double Tail "Fred. He nips at his tail too although he doesn't do it so much anymore. Question.. does Huxfish like shiny things outside his tank or doesn't like them? Sorry I'm just trying to think of some things that would entertain him.

Huxfish likes shiny things so long as they're not too big or colorful. Right now his favorite thing to look at is this little silver-colored paperweight statue thing that my mother brought home as a souvenir from a business trip. He also likes things that are blue and purple (he'll spend time looking at them or on the side of the tank near them) like polished rocks and flat marbles.

I have some other small knickknacks near my other tank, and I'll rotate/rearrange them between tanks about once a week so my fish have something new to look at every now and then.

That's really cool that you do that for them. I'm starting to try different things like marbles and stuff but I'm not sure how they like it yet. They kinda swim up to it and check it out and then look at me like what's that? Lol

My fullmoon has a HUGE body and even bigger fins but it doesn't stop him. It doesn't weight him down as when he is at rest his tail is completely displayed. He swims around the whole tank, hunts for any food that he might of missed, then hunts for invisible food. He is about 2-3 inches long

I had a halfmoon betta, Bandit, and he was a spaz. He had HUGE fins, though, and people were really surprised when they saw how much he would swim.
I think it's more of a temperament thing than a finnage thing, though finnage definitely plays a part.
