Question bout this rock.

My dad got this rock a long time ago while hunting in Colorado. Not sure what it is exactly. It has pretty decent weight to it and it looks great but I figure I'd share a picture of it and see if anyone recognizes it or something.

Did the vinegar test there was no visual bubbles that I could see. Should I give it a salt bath and poor boiling water over it and give it a go and watch my ph closely?

I'm excited for if this rock works out I really like it I think I might attach some moss to it or something

Definitly volcanic in origin. Colorado is an area that contains a lot of current and ancient volcanic activity.
My concern would be that it is a reddish color in an area known as a copper producing area... copper and fishies don't mix well.
Also, you mentioned it is heavy. Most highly porus volcanic rocks are suprisingly light.. light enough that most will easily float when placed on water. To me, this would indicate a metallic base.
I'd ask a local expert to run an analysis on it for you to see what it's composition is before using it. You could see if there is a metalurgical society near you, or possibly even a U.S. Geological Survey office you can call.
But.. I do agree that it's a very cool rock. And if inert it would be a fantastic addition.

The copper look is really the lighting its really more dark grey and it has a lighter grey side. It has no copper tint to it at all in person. Just my phone camera. Anyway I also thought it to be heavy for a volcanic rock. Ill see if I can find someone to check it out.

The lava rock sold in stores is very heavy! I have it in my tank. It is very beneficial and holds bacteria on it well. Many people actually use lava rock in their filter as bio material. It helps your water too. I say add it to a bucket of water, see if it leaches red. If not then add it to your tank. Colorado is famous for red river rock.

Looks like red lace/ribbon rock. Ive got 165 pounds of rock work in my 125, all red lace/ribbon. All purchased at LFS. I say throw it in a bucket with water and test it over the next few weeks and see if it changes.
