Question about sanitizing tank with bleach

I have some nasty parasites in my tank brought in from some native pond fish, unfortunately they have been euthanized and now I'm starting over but with aquarium fish only this time. I've already thrown out the driftwood and live plants. I plan to do the same with the gravel. I'm just keeping the tank, heater, lid, and canister filter (minus the filter media) This weekend I'll take the tank out in the garage and use a bleach/water solution and let it run for 15 minutes with the canister filter I've read to use 8 or 9 parts water to 1 part bleach, but have also seen some videos where they've used like 1 cup of bleach in a 100+ gallon tank.

CDC's guidelines is 1/3 cup of bleach per 1 gallon, which comes out to 1 part bleach 48 parts water. Based on CDC guidelines, I should use about 17.5 cups of bleach. According to some fish web sites, I should be using about 5 to 6.5 gallons of bleach. Can anyone chime in?

Thanks,

Dave

1:20 is more than enough. Make the solution, scrub it around, rinse it out then clean the tank with Dawn. You will have nothing to worry about after that.

If I were to pick one, I would trust CDC over some random fish websites. Of course you can always overkill by using a little bit more.

While Duane knows his stuff, it never hurts to double check. the bleach websight has a lot of info. Your biggest concern in using to much in the tank is corroding the silicone, if you are careful, it should be fine.

Just one thing to add . This is one of the only times to add straight tap water. The chlorine in tap water is in this case our friend as it will kill bacteria as it was intended if you add it without conditioner.

At least remember this as you rinse the tank multiple times.

After using bleach, be sure to rinse well with copious amounts of running water If you can smell any residual bleach, keep rinsing.

Finally, when filling the tank, add extra water conditioner to remove any residual bleach that might remain.

Why use bleach if all that needs to done is kill parasites. Bleach has the potential to dry out your tank silicone seal.
Maybe just nuke the tank with Copper Sulfate or Formalin. That way no need to discard substrate or filter media.

I have used bleach on many occasions with no ill effect. And once I have rinsed several times I always soak anything in treated water. (Prime)
Allowing it to dry after is just one more step if you are concerned.
