Question About Convicts Eating Their Own Fry

I have a 20 gallon tank, where I keep all my fry, and I was wondering if it was possible to keep only one parent in there once the eggs are hatched? Would that one parent eat the fry? For example, if I bred the convicts in that tank, and then once the eggs hatched removed the female from the tank, and reintroduce her once I sell the fry, would the male eat the fry if I left him in there?

 

In my experience, any fish that is tiny enough to look like food will be eaten, unless they can swim away easily and fast.

 

For clarification, these fry are the spawn of the fish that will be in the tank. The reason I am asking is because I heard convicts eat their fry to spawn again, but if I removed a parent so they wouldn't spawn, would they continue to care for the fry?

 

Yes, sorry, I got confused. You would probably be better off separating the mom and dad. They will eat the babies if they are getting ready to breed again, but as long as they are separated that won’t happen. The dad will probably not eat any fry.

I just had babies in my 20 gallon convict tank about a week ago. First spawn.
So far no lost babies that I can tell. My plan is to leave them in for one more week. Then transfer the fry to a 10 gallon grow out tank. I've heard about week 3 they start to pick the babies off to spawn again.

Honestly it doesn’t matter, but like the saying, mother knows best. You could leave either

 

Better to leave the female, males are less predictable with fry.
