Well, they're typically used as a place to put new fish before putting them into your main tank to screen them for diseases.

I have used mine both ways, but if I use it for a sick fish I am very careful to sterilize it when I am done with it. (the one time I had a sick fish in it, he had dropsy and died)

Right now the tank I was using as a quarantine tank is being pressed into service as a main tank because the vase (3 gallon) that I had my Betta in broke suddenly. Thank goodness I had another tank up and running as I couldn't have had 2 male Crowntails in one tank!

Q tanks are originally used to quarintine new fish before adding them to your tank, but after that the Q tank can double as a hospital tank for sick fish, to avoid having to treat the entire main tank, or even as a fry raising tank.
