Quarantine tank with bosmani rainbow fish and bolivian rams

I moved the 2 bosmanI rainbow fish and bolivian rams to a 10G today. I've treated with methylene blue the 1st two days and vermisol dewormer yesterday. I'm noticing fuzzy white patches on the bosemanI tails. I tried to treat with potassium permanganate but I forgot I had just added dechlorinator which neutralizes PP. I will have to wait until tomorrow morning.

Water turns brown because of the presence of dechlorinator. Must wait 24 hours for the dechlorinator to neutralize.

They were not sick when I purchased them. For all new fish, I give them a methylene blue bath to help with any small injuries or surface infections during the netting and the trip to my house.

I often deworm fish before putting them into my tanks. I treat for nematodes and tapeworm.

The fuzzy patches started yesterday. I try not to use antibiotics so I chose to use a potassium permanganate bath for 4 hours. Its also good for surface parasites.

I took some photos of the treatment this morning:







You can see that the tank walls are cloudy and brown. This is the PP reacting to the organics on the tank walls.

The fuzzy patches on their fins are clearing up. Their color is good and they do not look stressed.

There's still a fuzzy patch on the tail. I will probably need to PP again in 48 hours.

Sometimes we throw so many chemicals in with our fish that they cause problems that weren't there to begin with. This is not something we would recommend to inexperienced fish keepers.

A couple of weeks in a plain quarantine tank with clean warm water will usually take care of any little problems and show up any bigger ones.
