20 Gallon Tank Python water change system and small fish

Hello! So, total newbie to the Python system, but one of the reasons I stopped keeping fish before was all the annoying (and heavy!) buckets. So I have a Python and have done a couple water changes while the tank cycles fishless. But now I am totally consumed by wondering how on earth to not suck up small fish (tetras) and shrimp, when my tank has cycled? Should I put some nylon over the end? Or do the fish generally stay away from the siphon end? Thanks for any advice!

Some folks put pantyhose or even a fish net over the Python opening.

For those of us who use a Python, I think most of us have inadvertently “caught” a fish.

That is a great idea! I have a net. Thanks.
