Ive had my new betta for about two weeks now. He's a double tail I got from PetsMart with severe fin rot, definitely a pity purchase haha. I'm really happy to report that he's settling into his new home (a divided 10 gallon) well. The black rot at the end of his tail is gone, and now I'm doing daily water changes to help them grow back. There's a lot missing so it'll take a while, but I'm confident he'll be looking better in a few weeks.
He's been skittish since I bought him and he definitely didn't like the stress of moving into a new home from his dirty little cup. I think he associated me with that stressful change so he hid whenever I approached the tank. Slowly but surely he's come around though. He's becoming more curious about what I do in his tank and he won't hide now until he's investigated.
This morning, he finally made the connection, me + plastic syringe = FOOD! He had only eaten twice before, and only if something fell out of the syringe into his line of sight. But this time he went right up to it and pulled a glassworm out of the tip of it himself like my other bettas do! I'm very proud of him haha.
He was very excited about being fed. Maybe a little TOO excited. He was so enthusiastic about pulling his food out of the syringe that he drifted himself under the filter outflow and got pushed down. He briefly got stuck on the intake near the bottom of the tank, but was easily able to free himself since the Tetra Whisper i10 has a low flow. Poor guy did not like that at all, he started chasing his own tail once he got free, but then he started chasing a stray leaf, and then remembered food and got re-excited about that... he's kinda like a puppy lol.
I have the outflow of the filter baffled with extra sponges and a strip of plastic. I think I might try to baffle the intake as well since he can actually get stuck. It'll take some thinking since it's not a tube but a grate. It's an in-tank filter. Maybe a mesh bag would work. Betta proofing...
