After being hired by my LFS, I went and did my own research on our Discus which were dying. No one seemed to understand the problem so I did my own research and my own water tests (my original post is in my history). Our 50 gallon breeder had 2 Discus, both obscenely sick. I found the nitrates to be at the maximum level the API test kit can read, 160+ ppm. I estimate it to have been at 200. Anyways, this was last Saturday. I’ve been doing general maintenance on the tank, watching parameters, and using Lucky Bamboo to consume nitrates (Nitrates are now reading at 0-5 ppm). We changed the feeding regimen to be more nutritious and less wasteful. One Discus died near the beginning as we upped the maintenance and did daily water changes. Whether it was already done for or changing parameters that killed it, I don’t know. But the other Discus is doing great. This is not really a discussion post but I am just happy with how the fish is doing and I wanted to share.
To any Discus keepers that see this in the future, this is proof of how far clean water goes in keeping healthy fish. Never ever ever will the water get that bad as long as I am working there.
