Presenting... Lava Junior!

I found a crowntail that looks almost exactly like my Lava! I couldn't resist! He's a beautiful, near show-quality Betta. When he spreads his fins out fully they are overlapping and over 180 degrees. Would that be a delta or super delta? He has only one very minor flaw in that one of his rays is grown out a bit bent. This was the only reason the breeder didn't keep him. I found him at a small family-owned pet store that had a small but well kept fish selection. They had a few Bettas in clean half gallon bowls. (better and bigger than the usual cups) He looks quite healthy and playful.
I've got him temporarily in a 2.5 gallon bowl but next weekend I am buying a 20 gallon long tank and dividing it into 4 sections of 5 gallons each. Four of the boys (Frasier, Niles, Rocky and Lava Jr.) will be going in there and LP will be staying in the Hex tank.
Next month I'll also be getting another 20 gallon long, dividing it and setting up 4 of the girls in there. This should help the fish store effect I have going on in my living room somewhat. I think 10 fish is enough! ;D I'd love to have way more, but I'd have to win a lottery so I could stay home and just do water changes for 9 hours a day every day.

Here's a couple pics of Lava Jr. He looks SOOOO much like his namesake! He even has the little brown freckles on the top of his head that Lava had. He's feisty and has that tough crowntail attitude.

Phlox he is beauuuuuuuuuuuuutiful! You crazy nut...........10 fish.

I think you should get a job at a fish store like the one you bought him from!!!!! Please tell me is there crown tail & combtail and if so, what is the difference?? Or is there no such thing as combtail - don't even know where I got that from LOL.

You sure lucked out with him, best of luck & congrats!

I'd love to work around animals and fish, only problem is, if I didn't feel someone would be a good parent to their pet, I wouldn't sell it to them. I'd probably lose the job pretty quick!

There is crowntail and combtail but I still can't tell which is which. If someone knows please tell me, and tell me whether Lava Jr. is a crowntail or combtail.

I noticed the java fern in Angel's tank is getting really huge and bushy and out of control, so I just tore a few chunks of it off to give to some of the other tanks. I put some in Lava Jr's and Rocky's tanks. Rocky could care less and only wants to dance around like a fish possessed all day but Lava Jr. is just in love with the java fern! He's been swimming and leapfrogging through it and rubbing against it and tasting it and just really enjoying it. ;D Sometimes such a simple thing is all it takes to make them happy! I needed to distract him anyways from the airstone because he wasn't leaving it alone and kept biting at the bubbles. I was worried he'd swallow too much air and that's not good for them. He stopped doing that now and just goes over once in a while and sticks his butt into the bubble flow and lets it ruffle his tail.
Frasier is right next to him and he's been dancing and wagging his tail like a puppy. He's so sweet and playful he really wants Lava Jr. to come play with him but Lava is a real tough guy and flares at him to let him know he's not interested. It's funny how much more docile Veiltails are than Crowntails. Lava Jr. is a hefty little guy and packed with muscle! That's the only way he's different from Lava Sr. Lava Sr. was a long skinny guy and Jr has that classic Betta bulldog fighter body.

In my opinion he is a gorgeous crown tail betta (but I'm sure others will disagree with the crown tail part ). But the gorgeous part can't be disputed! Excepting for his colors, his fins and body type look just like Jett. Technically, if he has a 180 degree spread of his tail he would be a halfmoon. Jett is right there, or maybe just under, which would be a super delta.

Congrats, and welcome!

LOL! They are covering every available bit of space! We have a Quail as well but right now she is in my brother's room.
Next weekend I am buying a 20 gallon long tank and dividing it into four so I'll have 4 boys in there and one in the Hex tank. Next month another 20 gallon long for four of the girls. This should cut down on the number of tanks somewhat plus everyone will then have 5 gallons of space.

Thanks for the great link, Jendayi....when I see the crowntails in Walmart, they give them a blue lid instead of white. But everyone I look at looks like he has been sucked backwards through a shredder, then pushed back out. I am never sure if they have extreme f/t rot or what! They just never look quite "right".

So you are one lucky betta mommy, Ms. Phlox....have fun............I am sooooooooooo jealous. Val

I think he's borderline comb/crown.. his tailfin looks more like a crowntail, but his dorsal fin looks combtail.. I bet Rose would know which type he is best.

yea, we've found you can get rid of all kinds of stuff to make room for more tanks.

As I have understood it, the difference between the crowntail and combtail is:

Crowntails have more webbing than rays for length on the total fin part.

Combtails fins actually have not got much in the way of webbing compared to the super long rays.

Both types can be Double ray, Crossed ray, Double Crossed ray, and even Triple ray.

Lava Jr. is very precious looking by the way and looks very much like a Double ray Combtail to me.

He does seem to have double rays. I've just noticed it as I was watching him this evening. Instead of the double ray starting at the tip of the ray, his seem to start closer to the webbing part. Only his tail as far as I can tell is double ray. He was a great find and a very healthy well-bred Betta.

If you look at the pics on the link that I've posted, it is the exact opposite of the way Rose explained it.

Here is the IBC standard with pics: https://www.ibcbettas.org/StadBylawsForms/Crowntail%20Standard%20(effective%202-23-2004).pdf

First of all, we do not differ in our interpretations. Crowntails must have MORE than 33% of the ribs beyond the webs or they are not considered to be in the Crowntail class. This follows my understanding of one of the differences between the two species by sight. The Combtail does not have that restriction to my knowledge and I did not see anything in the information you submitted to contradict that statement. I see nothing "directly opposite" about it. It seems to agree only more defined and in an official document. Neither have I ever said that Combtails and Crowntails were the same thing. ( I modified the original statement as I did indeed have it turned around inserting ribs where I had stated web before....Rose)

Also we must be very careful to credit all pictures and printed material to authors and photographers as copyright laws do apply to all written material not produced on this site. Unless we have a written statement allowing reproduction of printed material or photographs credits must be attached to the material and even then it should be used with care. This is not meant personally but as a reminder to us all.

You said:

As I have understood it, the difference between the crowntail and combtail is:

Crowntails have more webbing than rays for length on the total fin part.

Combtails fins actually have not got much in the way of webbing compared to the super long rays.

From the , a direct quote, the emphasis is mine:

Description:
Crowntails are a type of ?fringe-finned? domestic betta (Betta splendens) having fin rays that extend significantly beyond the webbed portion of the fins. The supporting webbing between the fin rays is reduced and the rays protrude past the edges of the fin membrane. The result is a scalloped appearance (see Chapter 5: General Standards) or the appearance of hyper-extended rays as seen in Crowntails where the webbing is substantially reduced.

<snip>

Definition:
For the purposes of judging and placement in this class, Crowntails shall be defined as bettas exhibiting at least 33% reduction in webbing versus ray length in EACH of the three primary fins (caudal, anal and dorsal). This requirement must be demonstrated in all three primary fins but does NOT need to be exhibited between ALL rays to meet the minimum requirement to be classified as a Crowntail Betta.

By my interpretation, that is opposite of what you are saying. In crown tails the rays must be significantly longer than the webbing, by 33% at least. Combtails are just any fringed fin with rays that extend beyond the webbing. I don't mean to belabor the point, but I disagree with the perpetuation of misinformation. If you choose not to look at the pictures and information that I have linked, then there is nothing I can do about that.

I used direct links to the sources, so there is no copyright infringement there. If I had taken partial information or pics without giving a link, than maybe. I run a website of my own, I am aware of copyright issues. Since nobody else has linked to any pictures or information in this thread, I can only assume that you are referring to my posts and not as a 'reminder to us all.'

I am so sorry to disagree with you but I do not see anywhere that lists Combtails as "just any fringed fin with rays that extend beyond the webbing". They do specifically say the Combtails and Crowntails are NOT the same and if the definition you use for Combtails is correct it WOULD include the Crowntails as a part of the classification of Combtails. I do not believe that is what is implied and I believe you are simply looking for an argument. I am not above making a mistake but I feel this is a personal attack and I am not going to continue arguing with you over it.

The mention about the article was a generalization and stated as such and if you chose to take it personal then I am not sure what I can do about it, but I know that I used almost the same information at one time and was asked to be sure to give credit to the author and photographer.

Then we will have to agree to disagree. People are free to read the available information and make their own informed decisions. I'm sorry you think that having a discussion with supporting facts is a personal attack, that was truly not my intent. I will not reply any more either.

Phlox, my sincere apologies for derailing your thread about your gorgeous new boy. He is very special, indeed.

I got a couple more pics of him showing his double rays on his tail (he has a few on his dorsal and analfin too). I still haven't managed to photograph him fully spreading his fins out. They almost wrap all around his body!
He loves the Gel-Tek color enhancing vitamins. Only a couple of my fish will still eat them and he seems to really like them. It should bring out even more color in him within a week.

He has the funniest personality. All my other fish attack and jump when I feed them, rudely grabbing anything they can from my hand but Lava Jr is so polite... when I drop the pellet he looks at it, then turns his head and looks at me and then at the pellet and again at me as if asking "Is that for me?" ;D He won't take it until I say "it's okay you can have it". It's so adorable. :-*

That is a goergeous fish. Wish I had access to beautiful bettas like that. Most of the available around me are rehabs from Walmart/petco/petsmart. While they are definitely beautiful, they aren't of the same "show" quality.

LOL.. sounds like he's a real sweetheart like our Angel - she won't nip at the food on my finger when I stick it in the tank, but swims over and waits for it to fall. what a special little guy!

That is so adorable!! Honey devours her pellets with one gulp, she looked shocked yesterday when I piece of pea was a little too big, she swam around like a dog with a bone. I had to explain to her 'Honey, it is called chewing!! she got it and chomped away. Mum's Flame is gentle, he chews his pellets.

lol.. yea, they're funny swimming around with a big piece of pea in their mouths.. we try to tear them up real small, but sometimes one is too big so they keep swimming around with it until they need air or spit it out, chew and grab the falling piece. isn't feeding time fun? when we can, we like to feed them slowly and interact with them some in between pieces (aids in digestion too).

LOL.. I don't know.. our Bettas get kind of testy if we don't have their evening meal ready. but they don't wear undies so no worries there.
