Pregnant Swordtail?

Kaylah

Here is our new little one, a pinapple swordtail! We have a male but we we given a male platy instead of a female swordtail last time. Anyways, the store said she looked pregnant. We are new to this so I'm not positive but to me she does, what do you think? Also, if so, do you think she has much longer? we have a breeder box set up already and are debating whether to just put her in there rather than the big tank if she's going to drop soon. Thanks in advance!

She's 100% pregnant, not sure if she's boxed off yet though I don't think so. If your tank is lightly stocked and has some plants it's better to just let her give birth in the tank, and move the fry to the breeder box if you can catch them.

Another option is to leave the fry in the tank. Fry raised in a breeder box tend to be small, weak and unhealthy IME. Less will survive the culling by the parents but the surviving fish are the strongest and healthiest ones.
Btw, they often only hunt the fry for a day or two - from then on the fry are too fast to be bothered with. The exception would be a small tank - they'd always be at risk with little room to run.

Thanks! Here are two better photos. Idk if she's boxed or not.

I don’t think she’s quite ready to drop. Like others said, she needs to be more squared off. I don’t have a picture right now but you might be able to look one up? If I were you and I wanted the fry to stay alive, I would make sure you have lots of plants and hiding spots and just forget about the breeder box. You’re free to do whatever you want though! If you do end up using the breeder box I wouldn’t do it for a while then. Have fun with it!

She's pregnant. But looking at the size, she might be juvenile. If it's her first batch, it will always be a guess if she'll square off or not before dropping her fry. Especially, if she's still a juvenile herself.

She is a lot smaller than the swordtail we already have which surprised us. She looks maybe a little boxed to me but I'm a first timer and have no idea. I think she looks more today than yesterday.

Well, give it some time and watch her...
