30 Gallon Tank Pregnant Platy? New Weird Behaviors???

PurityNWhiteRoses

I am an experienced aquarium owner but this female high-finned platy has me stumped. I’ve had her for a few months now in a tank with what looks to be 2 other females and a male (it is hard to tell with the long fins but he’s much smaller). So far, I haven’t seen any breeding shenanigans but she seems to be filling out and surely eating a lot. She also has been jumpy and hiding a lot from the other females who keep pecking at her stomach.

Could someone let me know if she is pregnant or if it a false alarm?

Also, what are you opinions about breeder boxes? When do I put her in if she is pregnant? I have a large one with a fry funnel. I don’t know if helps to determine if I should use mine but I have two big blue gouramis, a small angelfish, a large Cory catfish, and a school of 7 cherry barbs. My tank is well-planted for the most part with fake plants because I don’t have a grow light.

It would be lovely if someone could let me know in the next few days! Thanks! ~Purity

Not going to guess on the pregnancy part, i usually jist assume female livebearers always are! Our platies certainly always are. I don't seperate mama at all. We used to seperate the fry in a grow out tank but they bred us out of the tank too fast doing that. If you have lots of hiding spots, some fry can usually survive, and usually not the dumb ones. If i had some hi-fins, i would seperate the fry in a grow out tank, they pretty uncommon in my area.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! My gouramis can be quite aggressive so I’m just a little nervous! I don’t have a grow out tank at the moment but would you say it’s a good investment even if I don’t intend on breeding my platys?

Another tank is ALWAYS a good idea if you ask me! Which is why i have 4 tanks with fish in it and 4 empty tanks in the garage...

Can be...in fact, one of the empty tanks will be the overflow for our current platy tank...they breed like rabbits.

She looks pregnant, but not exactly ready to drop yet. You don't have enough plants to rely on for the survival of fry in the tank. You don't have much choice but to raise them in the breeder box until they don't look like snack to the gourami and the angel.

My perception on a growout tank is actually a pretty big one with a lot of young fish in there, rather than a small one. A second tank is always useful, as long as you don't get tempted to fill it with new stock.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I’ll definitely have to check out investing in a new tank!
