I have a 75 gallon south American cichlid tank, with a gold severum a oscar a fire mouth and 4 black convicts. I was debating on if I need a powerhead in the tank, I have a fluval 406 canister filter and a marineland 350 hang on the back filter also I have a air pump on the tank. Do I need a powerhead? Does the fish I have require a powerhead? Will the powerhead be beneficial to my tank? And if I need one how many would I need for a 75 gallon and what gph?

HI there! From the sounds of things you have a ton of water movement that comes from many directions. That's awesome! In my humble opinion I don't think you need a powerhead as the HOB is most likely in-between the intake and output of the canister and you have an airstone to top it all off! Just my opinion but I think you are good. Too much movement and flow is not always a good thing!

Some fish do require a powerhead as they leave in fast moving water.. Powerhead also helps moving water around and flow thru your tank.. I use Uniclife 1058 Controllable Controller Circulation pump on my 75.gal tank I use not only for water flow but for my pink tail chalceus she likes fast moving water so during day I keep it moderate settings and at night I have it set on low

Totally agree. In my experience, the best thing to do is go species by species and determine what their needs are through internet research and calling LFS's. I was looking at the question in terms of the tank itself instead of the fish in it one by one.

Thank you for the reply I wasn't quite sure if I needed one I never use one before and I'm very unfamiliar with them.

Do you think any of those fish need a powerhead?

Your fish might no need it but it will benefit your water flow in your tank simply point your pump to the top so if any of your fish want spent time in moving water and when they don't like it they always find other calm place..
