We've had our Blue (male powder blue gourami) about 5 months, and he has had a kind of growth near the side of his mouth for most of that time. At first it just looked like he had irritated his face on something, as he is always ALWAYS rummaging and picking at everything for food scrap in the strangest positions and places. This has happened once or twice, in addition to this "growth", but those wounds healed up quickly. This fish also lost his whole tail, one of his feelers, and a good deal of his upper and lower fins (not to mention the gouges on his head and sides) when we found him wedged inside a decoration and had to buy cutters to apply the jaws of life. He stayed in a tank for about 3 weeks alone and healed up quite nicely from that too... But this growth will not go away! looked like even that had healed while in the qt tank, which is why I put him back in with genpop. But it started to come back after a week in the regular tank. It actually got worse! It's like a reddish spot with a gauzy looking area around the edges. It sticks out on the side of his mouth. He will not stay still for a picture. His behavior is pretty normal, appetite normal, pooping normal. And like I say, he's been living with it for months and we are stumped. None of the other fish have (or have had) any signs of this same issue.
( 25 gallon tall; 4 glowlight tetra, 2 black molly, 1 Cory, 1 young adult sailfin pleco...9", 1x1.5in mystery snail, and 3 zebra danios...and one other runt tetra that has been bullied by his buddies so he's away from them right now to regrow fins)
Water temp and quality is within decent common levels for all occupants. No one else seems affected. I've read of applying peroxide directly, but also read horror stories of skin peeling and some stories of subsequent deaths. Any help would be great!!
Also, before the whole pleco discussion gets started, I know he is technically just about outgrowing his current place....he will get a new tank soon. Although he has ZERO trouble getting around, he just disturbs the other small guys with his tail when he zips to the top to gulp air. ☺
