I don't really know if you can use a completely potted Pothos in an aquarium setting. It can't be completely submerged. I say this because the Pothos plant is used to soil, so those roots probably won't convert to water roots. Though they might. Pothos is amazing for Nitrate reduction though.

Put the plant by itself into the filter box (Hob) if not, you can clip the stem next to the aquarium.

I was planning on pulling it out of the pot, but do you have any suggestions on where to get one that was growing in water?

Don't buy it. I just asked on nextdoor (you can try craigslist or facebook too) and someone let me come cut a few leaves off their plant, which I put in water to grow roots. Super super easy to propagate.

Trust me when I say I can’t find anything around here lol. My grandma has at least 20 plants and has never even got her hands on one lol

I literally chopped a two foot length off and put the end in my filter basket. It took off immeadiately, greatest thing ever

I’VE HAD THESE IN MY HOUSE SINCE I STARTED LIVING HERE AND NEVER KNEW.

Ugh okay, sorry. I cannot believe they’ve been under my nose for 3 months while I’ve been looking for a way to lower my nitrates. Oh my goodness. How do I use them? Just cut a piece off and stick it in the filter?

yeah basically just cut off like a section with 3 or 4 leaves, then cut each leaf right before the leaf branches off and drop the cut part in the water letting the leaf hang out.

Also the top is definitely pothos. The bottom pic looks similar, but a little different. Maybe a different type of pothos, I'm not sure.

What if you have canisters and cannot really stick it in your filter? I have a HOB with the canister on the 40G but it's a covered filter, Tidal 75. What does it do exactly?

I have canisters.. I LITERALLY just have the roots in the tank and it's growing great both on top of the tank and in the water.. the fish swim through them, around them, and the Betta actually uses it as a hammock.

From what I've read, the roots suck up nutrients like nitrate and nitrite.

Dunno if it was that, but my tank cycled within 5 days of adding them, and I had scary high nitrites for the last 2 weeks.

Would you mind taking a picture of where the pothos are please. I am trying to figure out where I would put these if they cannot be submerged all the way. If anybody else would like to share their Pothos setup with canisters I would appreciate it.

I took clipping, put them in a glass for about a week to let them start growing roots.. then just stuck em in there..

I really cannot make out what the pothos is in, are they just hanging outside of the tank in nothing. How do they not fall down out of the tank? What is keeping them where you put them so only the roots go in the tank?

It's resting on the hood of the tank and over the edges. Think of the tank as a giant vase... The cut stem, now with roots is in the water.. the top half with heavier leaves is resting on the hood, the frame, over the side, etc. .

They're really pretty readily available I think.. they sell them in nearly any store with a garden shop.. home Depot, Walmart, etc.

Buy the plant, snip off a few stems and place them in a glass of water literally anywhere and they'll grow roots... Sunlight not necessary but indirect light is best so I've read.

Pothos is commonly referred to as Devil's Ivy because it's nearly impossible to kill by accident.

I will find some. I have a 6 inch opening in the back of my tank where the hood is too short so maybe can block it off with some rectangular pots that are 6 inches wide and fill in the opening with Pothos. Thanks for your help.

Yeah that space of perfect.. just fill that space with a few stems and that space will be covered in a month by thick leaves..

Not sure what you meant by "rectangular pots"

Just flower pots to put the plants in and have the roots hang out the bottom into the tank. I love this plant too, just usually kill it, planted that is. Hope it won't die on me.

I kill plants too. Pothos is hardy and unlimited water supply rich with nutrients is idiot proof. Yay me
