I know that with just the clown loach it will be overstocked. Maybe if you like the look of some loaches try either dwarf loaches or yo-yo loaches. Other than the loach it would be fine I think.

You'd be at 16"-18" without the clown loach depending upon what type of platys or mollies you get....With the clown loach you'd be at approx. 28"-30"......Clown loaches get big.....fast....They can get up to 12" long and really belong in a tank about 50g.

with just platies & mollies, maybe you could go with dwarf or yoyo loaches?

You could go with a school of barbs or a school of tetras.

You could try out a different type of barb/tetra. Or you could even try out some danios.

I'm thinking about picking a fish and then basing everything off that..like walk int othe pet shop pick one I like and then research compatibility

Here's a good compatibility chart you can use....How about some cory cats? They're a lot of fun to watch....We've got skunk and emeralds...Quite the little personalities and they'll help eat up the excess food that makes its way to the bottom.
you should get two dwarf gouramis. They are little and like to be in pairs.

Not necessarily...I have a lone male and he's quite the happy camper....Sometimes two will bicker over territory...If you do choose to get two, make sure you get a male and a female to avoid spats and have a high planted tank with places for them to hide near the surface....

Do you have any glass cats or x-ray tetras? those could be a cool theme for your 20g.
