Possible Baby Guppies?

Hi,

I’ve recently acquired some female guppies from a friend and believe that one is pregnant. I have never owned female guppies, only males which is why I’m unsure if she’s pregnant or not. If so, could you possibly tell me roughly how long until she drops her fry? I’ve had her about 2 weeks now and she looked like this when I got her.

Thanks in advance

HI everyone, I’m Hayley.

I’ve currently got guppies and some neon tetras. I have recently gained some female guppies from a friend and believe one to be pregnant. I was wondering if anyone could help me determine if she is and if so how long until she will drop her Fry.

Thanks in advance!
Hello and welcome to FishLore! Yes, she is pregnant. You can tell when her gravid spot (on the far left end of the stomach) darkens. Gestation can take from 21-30 days but 22-26 days is average pregnancy time. Good luck!

Welcome to Fishlore. She does look pregnant to me as well, keep us updated with her progress, you'll know shes ready to birth her babies when she gets box shaped and get a little sluggish.

Oh lord, I went through that. If you have a 30 gallon tank, you should be good. If you don't, unless you are quick, and get a bigger tank, or contact a friend or shop who will take them, you may have to euthenize them. What is better - keeping babies, but killing everyone in the process, or losing some for the greater good? I kept 1 of the babies to see it grow. I know euthenizing is sensitive, so sorry if I made anyone sad or offended. Best wishes!

yep! As a rule, when they come in, female guppies are always pregnant haha. Another way to tell is that when she is a day or two away from giving birth the gravid spot will turn white !
Although I've had friends who kept all female guppies and the tank never works long run. Guppies have such a strong urge to mate that if no males are there, it actually stresses them out more. Getting one male for every two females is a good idea, and you can sell the babies as feeders and the nicer ones some pet stores take for store credit!
