Popping songs from sponge filter

I got the large aquarium co op sponge filter. It’s working well enough, I have a nice stream of fine bubbles lifting from the air stone. No bubbles are escaping from the sides. At the surface the bubbles are breaking gently and quietly because they’re so fine.

But for some reason it’s making a loud popping sound inside the middle of the filter, every 5-10 seconds. Sometimes I’m able to adjust the connections or the tilt or something and it stops for a little while… but it always comes back. I tried switching to a gentler pump with less flow, to no avail…

any ideas how to stop the pop?

There is a little adjustable valve you can put on airlines to control air flow, isually costs a couple bucks, i would try that. Also make sure all the lieces of the filter are together correctly, which they probably are if no air coming out in weird places
