Pond Building Tips?

So we finally decided that we want our first pond ever and I have A LOT of questions. I’ve been watching pond building videos for a while now but each builder seems to have something different for his/her pond. Some have a “skimmer” (Are skimmers necessary? Are they basically filters?) others have irrigation systems. Some use tarps. What exactly do I need? Are there any experienced pond keepers that could give me any tips?

Let’s say that I buy a pond liner and filter. Is that enough to have a functional pond? If not, what else should I get?

A liner and a filter is usually enough (you might need a heater too), plus you have to remember that the pond will need to cycle as well. All this also depends on what you plan on stocking in the pond and how big it is as well. I don't have a pond, just a rain barrel....but I know a couple of people who have had ponds (small ones and fairly large ones)

I should’ve added that I live pretty close to the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. Water does not usually freeze. If it does, it’s very thin so I don’t think I’ll need a heater. I also plan on putting cold water fish anyways. Thanks for the response.

It gets rainy though. Wonder how I’d deal with it overflowing.

If you live in one of them "red sand" areas, you might want to use some of the water to water some potted plants around the house or something before it is going to rain. (I lived in Cleveland, TX for almost 3 months awhile ago and when it would rain, the red sand would just flood everything out completely).
