Polyester Floating Inside Aquarium

Hi, I tried to install a DIY water polisher filter by putting in some polyester in a bottle and attaching it to a power head but I noticed small pieces of the polyester breaking up - like tiny threads - and they are floating around the tank. Does anybody else have this problem or know how to fix? I guess I can put the polyester inside a net but I've seen tons of people install these water polishers before and never seen them needing to use nets?

Yes this happens to me when I use polyester too.
It’s annoying but mine clears up eventually.
I’ve heard some brands sell specific aquarium type polyester that are held together better but I’ve never tried.

The foam is a great idea! I don't have one handy tho for the size I need so I'll have to shop for one or get a large piece and cut it to size...btw, anybody know of a good place to get cheap foam? I get mine on Amazon but they're not always cheap and the really cheap ones there always makes me wonder about the quality.

I get the Aquaclear ones from amazon and they're only a couple dollars

Thanks, Valarie! I'll check those out on Amazon.

UnderwaterGalaxy - I just noticed in your picture how well rounded the hole edges are on your filter's green cap. Did you make it yourself? How did you get the edges to smooth out like that?

I actually got the picture off google as I've never seen a filter like that. But if I were to guess, he used a thick nail and heat.

Why not put the poly fil into your canister or HOB? is your tank running just a sponge filter?

I just stuff poly into my canisters...with the HOB I placed them at the bottom and put sponges and media on the top.

Yeah, I'd like to put them in my canister but I have large red parrots and they produce a lot of waste so I need to change the polyester frequently and my large canisters are not as easy to clean. The tank also isn't positioned well for a HOB so that's why I was considering a DIY water polisher.
