Would you buy spider wood or something like that and sponge filters for breeding?

I had a tough time finding suitable looking pieces local, and I ended up buying a few here and there, but spent a while looking.

And can't go wrong with the sponge filters

I personally would use spawning mops or live plants, well because the only fish I've ever wanted to breed is goldfish, but still live plants give the added bonus of extra filtration on top of being a good hiding place for fry.

I have sponges and a poop ton of java moss in all my tanks. I have also used spawning mops I've made and they work too. I will be using spawning mops for breeding dwarf neon rainbow fish

It depends. If the filters are only for breeding then no. But it they are for always & are not too expensive, then yes.
