I had a pleco in my cichlid tank and its eye was ripped out the moment I noticed his eye was ripped out I moved him to its own tank.I know a five gallon is way to small for a common pleco but at the moment it was the main empty tank available. Will my plecos eye ever grow back and how often should I do water changes to prevent it from getting infected.(Just a side note the residents of the cichlid tank include 3 convicts and two jewel cichlids

The eye will not grow back. That said, methylene blue added to the water is often used as a prophylactic treatment. But it will damage or kill plants, and don’t use charcoal with it.

And water needs to be really, really pristine clean, without any exceptions. So daily water changes, and indian almond leaves (catappa) do have antimicrobial properties. I would also add a few of them too if they are suitable with other medications. Extremely good diet if he eats, as much as he eats, because it's hard for body to heal and it takes lots of energy and nutrients.

I put in a couple sticks from a tree outside in his tank for him to much on since his vision makes it difficult for him to find his usual flakes which I usually feed him

Hmm, I would give blanched vegs too, and perhaps bit of prawn (real one, not flakes etc) or fish. They do need quite a lot of protein at times, and healing from major injury is one of those times.

Unfortunately I can't really give him a prawn because I don't really live near the ocean or any major fish markets

Ok, he should be ok with versitile, good diet, and really clean water. Please keep us updated, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him! When you next time go to shop, you can get some frozen prawns of fish and give him some of that.

Remove the wood from before it rots. Keep the water squeeky clean. Melafix Might help his eye heal.
