Pleco Question - Tank Size

So I got my 55 gallon tank yesterday, and it came with a 7 year old pleco... he is just under a foot long.

Will I be able to keep him if I upgrade to a bigger tank (probably a 125g tank) within the next two years??

Just looking for some advice, I will do the responsible thing if I have to, but I would like to keep him if I can!

EDIT: oh by the why it looks like a sailfin pleco, I could be wrong, but he looks A LOT like it...

 

A lot of people will say no, mostly because your tank is only a foot front to back, and so he's got to be having quite a time trying to turn around in there. If you can't find another home for him, then he could probably survive in there if you don't put much else, but try to get it faster than 2 years.

 

Two years is a long time to be so cramped.

 

Has he been in that tank for the past 7 years? Shouldn't he be bigger by now? If not, then I would agree with the above posters. He wouldn't have much room at all in a 55.

 

I am budgeting "safely" for two years (in case anything happens), but I am really hoping to pull it off in a year...

 

The awful thing about planning on a new tank is that quite often, that new tank never comes to fruition. Why not rehome this pleco and if you do end up with a larger tank down the road, you can get another one. It's really not fair to the fish.

Thank you LyndaB... I will probably keep him for another month, just to make sure he gets healthy again, because the move was EXTREMELY stressful for him...
