A friend got a pleco to “help” clean up her 2.5g betta tank. She now knows that a any pleco is unsuitable for her tank. The fish store just sold it by the name of “sucker fish pleco”. Looking to ID it to find him a proper home.

Looks like the usual "common pleco". These guys can be one of a few different species but all grow well over a foot long, usually closer to 2ft long. Tell you friend to return it as they need at least a 75gal+ tank. A nerite snail will do far more cleaning than any fish. Better yet, the best thing to clean up a tank is the owner. You should never get fish simply to clean up the tank as all fish will create more waste than they clean up, plus they would have to be fed supplementary foods as no tank will provide enough algae and biofilm to keep something like a pleco alive.

That sucks we were hoping it would be one of the smaller species of plecos so that she could just upgrade. She’ll have to give it back to the lfs then. Thank you for your help.

Definitely one of the bigger ones
