What is the water volume of the tank?
It’s a 5 gallon hospital tank. He was previously in a cycled 20 gallon community tank with 3 tetras, 4 snails, and two small mollies, but I moved him into the 5 gallon when his fins turned white and disappeared - about three weeks ago.

How long has the tank been running?
5 months

Does it have a filter?
Yes

Does it have a heater?
Yes

What is the water temperature?
80ºF

What is the entire stocking of this tank?
1 male betta

How often do you change the water?
once a week, but recently every day

How much of the water do you change?
25%-50%

What do you use to treat your water?
Prime

Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water?
I’ve done water changes only. he’s only been in there for about three weeks. No prior fish.

Did you cycle your tank before adding fish? Yes

What do you use to test the water?
API test kit

Parameters
Ammonia 0.0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate 10
pH 7.2

Feeding
How often do you feed your fish?
1 x day

How much do you feed your fish?
4-5 small pellets

What brand of food do you feed your fish?
Hikari pellets, sometimes hikari freeze dried blood worms or daphnia as a treat (tiny pinch)

Do you feed frozen or freeze-dried foods?
Freeze-dried

How long have you had this fish?
1 year

How long ago did you first notice these symptoms?
About 3 weeks ago. This seems to have come on quickly -

In a few words, can you explain the symptoms?

His fins have become extremely short and white. The dorsal fin never had white on it until three weeks ago. This seemed to happen over a couple days, if that’s possible.

His eyes also look like they’ve aged quickly, but I have no idea what’s causing it.

Have you started any treatment for the illness?
yes. I used paraguard everyday for 5 days without seeing any change. I’ve been doing daily water changes using prime.

I did daily water changes to clear out the paraguard and then used furan-2 in the tank (I don’t know if they should be mixed). He immediately had difficulty breathing with the furan 2. It was very labored and he was tipping to the side. So I did a water change.
I gave him a break from meds for 4 days to let him calm down along with daily water changes.
Yesterday I gave him a methylene blue dip. The white seems to be moving to his body today, so I don’t want to do anything more with meds until I can get some advice.

Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase?
No

How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all?

Really short fins with some white.
He is resting more at the bottom of his tank. Usually he is near the top. He’s still eating well.

I am wondering what is happening to his fins - fin rot? Does anyone have thoughts about how to treat it?

Thank you for any advice you can give!

Sounds like fin rot. Medication can be a bit hard on bettas, you can try aquarium salt but keeping his water pristine will help a lot.

Thanks! I used aquarium salt earlier on, but haven’t kept it up. I’ll try adding some again.

Also adding some catappa leaves (same as Indian almond leaves) can help healing the fins as they release antibacterial and antifungal properties (they will dye the water a browny yellow colour).. hope he gets better soon

I will definitely try the leaves. It’s my son’s fish and he is very worried about him, as am I. Thank you for the response!
