My betta, Puffy, is losing fins..it is getting shredded and i don't know why..first he shredded his upper fin that got discoloured at first and then got healed by itself and now having its blue colour back..but now his lower and back fins look shredded...i don't know why...is it possible that Puffy is shredding it bcz it's heavy for him? Or is it fin rot that i should worry about...how can i fix it??? He is active otherwise..i do regular water change..also another thing, he has stopped making bubbles..should i be worried? Is he sick?

Hi Deb95 ,
Is the fish (Puffy) is in a bowl without a filter or heater?

How often are you changing water and how much each time?

Ok no heater is necessary in India.
It’s hot in Australia where I live but I get a cold winter for a few months.

Keeping fish without an electric filter will require multiple small water changes or a bigger tank with lots and lots of plants.

To keep fish in that bowl without an electric filter you may need to change half the water every two days or more often. .?

Without the test results of the water I can only guess what the water is like. It’s very likely the water is burning the fins and skin ?
You need to change some water more often just to keep the fish alive.

Keeping fish without a filter is not something I have done .
Using plants as PART of the water filter is something I do.

It looks like there is a green plant in there, that I would suggest removing, because it could be sharp and rip his fins.

Without the water parameters the fish's gills could be burning, and if not the nitrate levels could be high. You should change the water more often. What is his tank size?

If you live in India there is no need for a heater, but like said above, you should get a filter.

Remove plastic plants and any decoration that can possibly rip/tear its fins. Is it a fish bowl that it’s living in? I would highly suggest moving your fish to a bigger tank (2.5 gallon at minimum, preferably 5 gallon and up). That way ammonia don’t build up as quickly and it will save a lot of your time from daily water changes.

Most fin damage can heal on its own with clean water and good diet. Good luck.

Thank you, all! I actually dont removethe plant bcz he usually sleeps in between from the day i brought him..however, i will try changing it and move it to a more bigger aquarium. For the time being, i will do regular water changes.
