Hi! I really need some help.
I recently got a cichlid from a friend. That friend had the 5 inch cichlid in a 10 gallon with another cichlid.
Anyway I noticed that the cichlid was constantly flashing. At the time it was living alone. Then I noticed that there were tiny white worms on the glass.
At this point I thought that I would get an algae eaters and see if he eats the worms to determain if these were good or bad worms. The water parameters are perfect so I got 2 pictus catfish.
Now today the cichlid is still flashing the pictus don't appear to be doing well as they aren't active and breathing heavy.
I wanted to know what was goin on so I look closely at the glass to try and see if the worms were still there. No worms but SUPER tiny little white things. They look like worms only they move very fast and then I noiteced they were starting to get off the glass and free swim.
I don't know what these white things are but if you do could you please identifie them. Sorry I can post a pic, they are to small for my camera to pick up. The tank is located next to my gecko which has a heat lamp.
Could the fish be getting hurt or erratated because of the red light at night time?
I'm going to put paper in the side of the tank to block out the red light. Also the cichlid and the pictus have no apparent signs of illness.
Sorry for the long post but I want to give as much information as possible.
Thanks in advance

How many gallons is the current tank? Pictus catfish need at least 55-gallons and prefer being in groups of five or more, I believe. What species of cichlid is this? Can we get a picture of the tank? What are the water parameters? Is the tank cycled? Can we get a picture of each individual fish? What is the temperature of the tank? What do you feed them?

Water parameters:
Ammonia: 0
PH: 7.8
Nitrate: 1.5
Nitrite: 0

The tempature is 76-78
The pictus are babies. Currently they are in a 20 gallon. In a while they will be moved into a 75 gallon. The cichlid is also in the 20 gallon. The cichlid is a KenyI cichlid. The tank is cycled.
Each fish you have needs at least a 55-gallon tank. You may want to purchase that 75-gallon ASAP, as your cichlid is full grown and most likely uncomfortable in such a small tank. Your set-up also isn’t very suitable for either species. They both enjoy plenty of rock work, caves, plants, and driftwood. You should look into rescaping if they’re going to be there for a while. When you get the bigger tank, make sure you decorate it to their needs as well. As for the scratching; I believe this is completely normal behavior for cichlids, which explains why the pictus catfish don’t do it. The worms may also be isopods or another beneficial crustacean. Do they really look like worms? Try looking closer.
