Please Help!! Bug Spray Nightmare!!

Hello, I’m absolutely terrified. My mother sprayed flea spray 2 hours ago without my knowledge near my fish tank, less than a foot away. I checked the bottle and it is the extremely lethal to fish kind. My tank has a hood, but there is holes in it, and my airpump was still on. I’ve since covered the tank with a wet towel and turned off the airpump, but it’s way too late for that now. I have a betta and 2 corys. They’re all still alive and acting normal but I’m terrified they are going to die. I have a lot of duckweed on top of my water, and I’m wondering if that has protected the water from the chemicals? Please advise me on what to do. Should I take the duckweed out carefully and do a 50%, 75% or 100% water change? Would my fish already be dead if they were going to die from this? I’m going to get carbon filters to change out daily because I know this can help filter the chemicals. Please help I’m freaking out! Also I apologize if this is the incorrect forum. I’m not a complete beginner but I am a beginner with this problem!

They might be OK. In the future I would suggest IGRs like Gentrol for fleas.

Without knowing the specific spray used I doubt if anyone can give you a definitive answer, but if the label says it's lethal to fish and they aren't showing any symptoms they probably didn't get enough to cause damage. I'd do at least a 50% water change anyway, and another one tomorrow.

I to would do a water change. The best solution to pollution at your stage is dilution.

They will survive. If they act normal then yes, they will be fine. Don't worry

Change the filter in your air pump, it should be on the bottom. Also put fresh carbon in your filter. Change it every other day. If you can smell the bug spray it will still get in the water...... Oh, and the others are correct on the water changes.

Thanks everyone, sorry I didn’t reply sooner as I didn’t realize my post was active! I thought it wasn’t approved for some reason. I did a 50% change, and put in a new carbon filter and airpump filter. Somehow they’re all acting fine an dandy still!

I suggest to wipe down the exterior of tank, stand, electrical cords, air line tubing, etc etc, with warm soapy water and paper towels. Change out paper towels for new ones after wiping each section. Then wipe down the floor if it's not carpet.

To help get rid of fleas, thoroughly vac and wipe down floors and corners and pick up everything off the ground as best you can. Use IGR type products like AvalancheDave suggested.

Is there a dog or cat with fleas? If so, spray the yard, bathe the animal in a flea shampoo and use Seresto flea collar. Those work great.

I think saltwater60 's hazmat experience is showing through again with the solution to pollution. Ha
