Please diagnose my dwarf gourami

I just bought two dwarf gouramis yesterday (not sure if they're both male or one is female).

I left for work in the morning and both dwarf gouramis seemed fine. However, when I came home at night one of the dwarf gouramis has cottonmouth and giant white blotches on both sides. The other gourami looks ok.

Please tell me what disease it is, and how I can treat it.

Looks like dwarf gourami disease unfortunately. It is a deadly disease that affects most commercially bred DGs. This is why a lot of people don't even buy them anymore, because it's a losing gamble. Unfortunately it is fatal and no known cure, typically once it gets this bad the gourami only has a week or two left. I would immediately remove the infected gourami and set up a proper hospital container with heater and airstone and keep your fingers crossed the other will pull through, however it's pretty contagious. If they do not make it, I'd suggest honey gouramis as a good alternative. They are much much less susceptible to DGD.

Thank you Fishstery!

I set up a 5 gal hospital tank and added Fritz maracyn 2. Let’s hope this gourami can pull through.

Treating what exactly ?
Fungus. Wouldn’t hurt at this point.
Update - the gourami in the hospital tank is dead. I’m going to bring it back to the fish shop. The other gourami is still pretty healthy looking, should I keep it or bring it back to the shop?

So I have a few options:
1 - Keep the healthy Neon Blue and get one honey gourami. Can they be kept in the same tank?
2 - return the healthy Neon Blue as well and get two honey gouramis
3 - if I get two honey gouramis, can I keep a betta with them?

thank you for everyone’s reply!

Sorry to hear.

But for the record : Maracyn treats bacterial infections IMO. Those are quite different than fungus.

The fact that this happened in a day, could mean they had a fight.

No you cannot keep dwarf gourami with honey gouramis, and you cannot keep a betta with them either.
What size is the tank?
I wouldn't rush to restock it with anything. It is most likely DGD but there is no way to know for sure without a biopsy. If it was another kind of infection in the tank i wouldn't immediately stock it. I'd wait a few weeks and get a few water changes in beforehand. It's your tank so you can do as you please, but it may be a bit of a risk adding new fish so soon.

Good to know, I will wait a few weeks and see. I can return the fish within 30 days so let me keep an eye on the tank first.

I read some people had luck keeping honey with female betta, since they are less aggressive. They probably got lucky.

My tank is an established 20 gallon, with cherry barbs, cardinal tetras, and oto cats. I’ve been thinking about getting a center piece. I want either a pair of gouramis or a male betta.

I just found this the article jinjerJOSH22 wrote “
My thoughts on Dwarf Gourami/Trichogaster Lalius”, and realized I got two male gouramis and not a pair as I was told.

Let’s hope the other gourami doesnt have some underlying diseases.

Thanks again for replying

On the front of the package it says treat cotton wool disease, and the gourami did look like it had fungus. So I figured I'd give it a try.
