Please be open minded.

I’ve noticed a serious trend in the hobby, many people who think highly of themselves when in place of power (not necessarily on this forum,I have not noticed a trend like this on FL)but many other social media places aswell such as reddit/discord etc where people seem to set down ground rules when it comes to fish keeping such as “if you don’t do xyz you aren’t doing it right”. I’ve seen many claims such as “if your fish don’t breed in the tank, they aren’t thriving” or “water parameters is everything in fish keeping”. Fish keeping is a hobby, where yes, there are correct practices but not everything that is said is law. So I ask that please be open minded when it comes to fish keeping. Respect others opinions and practices and even if you don’t agree, it doesn’t mean you should be snobby to them to get them to agree with you. Tank sizes and care are controversial and everyone has their own take on them. Sure I’m a hypocrite sometimes while saying this but I try to be open minded in this hobby.

I completely agree.

Nothing in this hobby is carved in stone and is the reason I always try to use words such as should, possibly, might or make sure I say it is just an opinion. If we would all remember where we were when we first got into this hobby we will hopefully try to be gentle with others while trying to help. I hope we can all learn not to speak in absolutes. There are no absolutes in this hobby.

The only thing I am adamant about is the fact that fresh clean water is the very best thing most of us can give our water pets. Even that isn't an absolute because some folks have healthy tanks without regular water change.

The only thing in keeping fish that is an absolute to me...is that Mother Nature always gets her way in the end....and she can be a cruel, cruel mistress...

Agreement from here as well. I noticed some more forceful tones on some of the posts lately, and am really glad that this site is moderated.
