Simple question, which would be better to use as a planted substrate Play Sand or Pool Filter Sand?

In this scenario it doesn't matter. They would be the same. Sand is inert and doesn't provide nutrients to the plants. You'll need to fertilize either way, with root tabs or liquid, depending on the plants you choose.
Your decision is purely an aesthetic one. Pick the one that gives you the look you want and fertilize accordingly. I prefer the pool filter sand, but sand is different depending on where you live. Out here in Oregon, play sand is basically small gravel and turns to awful mud when wet.

Play sand has a higher clay content hence the muddy after effect. Plus the clay acts as softener so it's not as abrasive to children. I used pool filter sand, washed twice in my non planted tanks

I used PFS in a tank before I went to black sand. I liked it. It was clean and cheap.

It's really preference to you. I went with Pool filter sand. All you have to do is make sure that the sand is cleaned pretty good. Just wash it and stir it. Pool Filter sand is a little lighter than Playground sand but regardless it's all up to how you want the tank to look.

Pool filter sand is a crystalline silicate and not like the sand found on a beach.
Play sand is more like beach or river sand. It comes from a number of sources, including crushed rock or silica-type sand, so if you go that route, just check to see which it is. The silica type will not be as muddy.

Pool filter sand is much better. The compatability of play sand will cause more anaerobic pockets.

Agree. The rounded same sized grains of poolfiltersand causes it won't close down very easy. I am lovin' it. Oh no that's about burger !!!

I agree with Teishokue, Play sand will pack down more and can cause toxic gases if you do not move it and disturb it every once in a while. I have used both and never noticed the pockets with PLF.
