So I have . . .
1 - female betta
3 - Platys (1 male (orange) 2 females ( Green/blue and white) I feed HIKARI micro pellets)
4 - Guppies ( I feed HIKARI micro pellets to the guppies the same time I feed them to the platys)
1 - Galaxy Rasbora ( I feed HIKARI first bites but the other fish tend to eat it because he just ignores it and pecks at stuff around the tank but I don't want him to starve in case he actually needs the food)
3 - Salt and Peppered Cories ( I feed them HIKARI mini Algae Wafers, all of the other fish except the betta and rasbora peck at the wafers)

There's a good chance that they're pregnant

Hikari fish food products are junk , cheep fish meal and grain fillers. I urge you to toss it out and try somthing else, bug bites, new life spectra, omega one, Xtreme...
Your platy looks pregnant.

Use up the Hikari , or when it’s 3 months from the day you opened it then it’s only suitable for feeding to the wild birds outside in the garden.

When you buy more food buy a smaller container so you don’t waste money on throwing food away.

To answer your question.
If you think you are feeding to much you probably are.

With both sexes in the same tank they are 100% pregnant guaranteed.

From the looks of both photos there is nowhere near enough cover for fry to survive long enough for you to see them.
Any floating plants dead or alive including plastic will give the fry a place to swim and feed on whatever is at the surface.

There are now 3 generations of fry swimming at the surface of this tank and another 5 tanks of fry. Given that it’s all from just one female who has had no contact with a male for almost 5 months I definitely have to many.

Your fry are being eaten . That is another reason they are over eating.

So I can not use the fish food after 3 months? I don't think they have ever given birth in the tank yet, I think the Platys have been a bit pestered by the male guppies and I don't think they have had time to mate.

At six months from the time you first open the fish food it really should be tossed . It depends how you store the dry foods as well. If the pellets are in a sealed jar in the refrigerator and you only open once a week it to get enough for a week six months is not unreasonable. If you have the bag open everyday and put damp fingers on the dry food with each serving then it will not last as long.

I hope some fry show up for you soon. Any floating plastic , drinking straws etc can be used to give the fry a hide out. First thing in the morning at sunrise is a good time to find fry hiding. With enough cover a few fry might survive to adulthood in any tank ?

So you think they have all ready had babies, I have only had them for about 2 months? I store the food in the bag I open the bag once a day and make sure my fingers are dry and once I am done I fully seal it.

Yes I do think the females are dropping fry. They look to be juvenile / adult size? More than 4 months old ? It is normal behaviour for all the adults to eat any fry . Or at least try to . The betta is a hunter and will spend more time hunting down fry. Guppies and platies lose interest if they don’t catch an easy meal that is still learning to swim .

Hey Flyfisha , sorry to butt in but I overbuy fish food purposefully, store it in a freezer and use small jars that last for around a month outside of the freezer. How long will the flake/pellet/live last frozen?

As for you Silverleaf209 , the orange appears to be male so far but of course, the analfin is clamped to the bottom (not due to stress). I've had big, chunky male platies when definitely not overfeeding, same with guppies. I believe it's a natural body shape for adult male livebearers. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the picture Silverleaf209, I will admit I find platies very hard to sex as juveniles even when looking closer in a small glass container. Why yesterday I am trying to sort out a tank of youngins that are under an inch long. I don’t want to make a judgment call on a fish from photos. That picture does seem to show an orange male.

Hey JustAFishServant I don’t have an accurate answer as to how long dry fish food lasts in the freezer compartment of a refrigerator. You could research how long fresh fish can be kept in a freezer before it starts to lose nutrients. Something I read once said 3 months?

Longer than if stored on a shelf. Longer than if stored in a poorly sealed original container.

It would also depend on the particular brand as well. A brand I have been using lately is called Vitalis. This one has a very high moisture content when first opened. It’s very soft and damp with a strong smell.

I can’t see the anal ( bottom) fin clearly enough with any of those pictures. You are looking for a fan shade for a female and a stick shade for male.

Okay then she is a female. How do you tell if they are pregnant?

They are pregnant all their lives. Unless you have the females in a separate tank for months and months she will still have some of the males contribution . She can store then release what she needs to give birth for a few months after the males are all removed. Her male offspring can breed with her at 3 or 4 months of age . Unless they are removed early enough she will be pregnant again.

These fish are so cheap to sell it doesn’t warrant the time and money involved for breeders of pet store grade fish to raise the fish in separate tanks. They are pregnant when you buy them. At least that is how chain stores in my country sell them all from the same tank just as they were raised from birth.

We can not see any way of telling if they are pregnant. A young female will have only a few fry until she grows to true adulthood.

So they are already pregnant?? I got these fish from a tank of "all Females" from my local pet store.

Oh that’s good news that the shop houses them like that. :) We have identified she is with a male now so it’s likely he is healthy enough to be a father?
