Plants with LED lights?

There's a lady that I take care of her tank for her and she hasn't had a light on the tank for at least a year if not more but she finally got a light after I've been after her since I started taking care of the tank but the light she got is an LED light. Now she's asking about plants... can she have any plants? If so what kind can she have she has a 45 gallon tank and she only lets me come once a month to care for the tank so they can't be something that grows really fast... anything I can do?

It depends on the fixture, there are new fixtures coming out now strong enough to grow plants, but these are pretty high end. The marineland LEDs are the most common ones sold in pet stores around me, they have 2 kinds, single bright lights, which are the cheapest, IME are not strong enough for any plants. The other, double bright can grow low light plants provided the tank is not too deep. I have a doublebright fixture with 9watts of LED on a 30gal 21 inch deep tank, it grows java fern, java moss, anaubias , marimo , aponogeton bulbs and marimo moss balls.

My 20 gallon high tank has marineland led lights on it (the standard ones that came with the kit) and it is growing most low light plants very well.

I saw the double brights I wanted to know if you put 2 on a 55 gallon I think is 20 inch deep would that be good for most plants

We had a 20h and a 10gal with the marineland single bright, plants started to wither after a couple months, same plants recovered when moved to a tank with more light.

I think that as long as you got the 24inch fixtures it would grow low light plants

I have a 40 gallon breeder with a Marinelande Double Bright growing java moss and najas/guppy grass. Should be OK for plants that are good with low light. I wouldn't go with anything but very low light plants. I also don't know how well they would work with the single brights, my guess would be not well.

If willing to lay out some more cash, Marineland now sells LED fixtures which as geared towards planted tanks but they are pricey. I also haven't looked into how effective they are.

Thanks everyone for the info... I'm not sure which kind they got and they don't know what it is so I told them I would bring some of my extra java fern and jave moss over to try in their tank if it doesn't do well then we'll know that no plants can go in there.
