Hi,

Nope, those fish would not eat plants. Gravel is also not a problem. The main think you want to think about is lighting. What kind of lighting do you have? That greatly affects the kinds of plants you can have.

I have a incondescent bar. If there is better lighting I will go buy that. When I get the plants.

T5H0 in my opinion is the best for growing plants. Check your bulb size eg. T8 it will say something like that but if you have the money I would get a t5 fixture that light bulb won't be the best for growing plants.

Even switching to cfls would be beneficial. Is this in a hood...or a light strip?

Its a stip the hood has a glass panal which the light bar is on top of so the light shines down. The light bar has no markings what so ever so I'm assuming its a plain old incondesent bulb. So for a 29 gallon what's the best light. Sorry for no other info. Honestly I just need to know what type of light how many wats and what's a good brand. Ill then look it up and if it seems like it will do the job I will go purchase it.

Fluorescent light is a long tube that connects to sockets at both ends and looks like this.....

You've referenced your light as a bar, so not sure if it is incandescent or something else. If you post a picture of the light we can determine exactly what you have currently.

If you remove the tube, on one end there is a stamp with info on the bulb itself. This will include the color temp and the type of bulb. If you can provide what is printed on the tube then we can determine exactly what type of light you currently have. Only then can we say whether or not plants will grow in your tank with any confidence.

If you are unsure of the age of the bulb now might be a good time to just replace it with one that will be more condusive to plant growth as well. That choice is yours.
