Plants For A New Betta Tank

I had plants for my betta who died a few weeks ago. But I know nothing about plants - which ones to choose, how to take care of them, what kind of light is best, how to feed, how to prune, etc. The plants were okay when Fishy Boris Karloff died, but since I didn't know if his death left behind some bad stuff, I took everything out of the tank to clean it well. I put the plants on the ground, deep in the runaway honeysuckle out back. Maybe they became food.

In the next few days I'll be putting this tank together and starting the cycle. I don't have any media to jumpstart the cycle, but that's okay. I'm patient. But do I put the plants in while the cycle is going?

What plants would you recommend for my five-gallon tank? I don't want to crowd it, but I do want to give my new fish somewhere to sit and somewhere to tuck her/himself away. They can't grow tall - the tank's less than two feet in height. I don't want the kind that have needles that fall off. I had a great plant for Fishy Boris. He could sit on the leaves and he could hide in them. I hope I can find that plant again, because I don't know what it's called.

Do you have any advice for me? Can you tell me what plants would be best, what kind of lighting, what kind of food, etc.? Or can you point me to a comprehensive guide? For opinions and suggestions, I'd be most grateful.

Amazon sword is a good plant to start with! They’re super easy to take care of!

Thanks to you both, BottomDweller and Lindsay Huff! I appreciate your input.

Anyone else have ideas or opinions? All are welcome!

Is it OK to have plants in the tank while using ammonia to cycle it? Thanks!
