Plants at WalMart?

Okay, soooo... How safe do you guys think it would be to buy plants from Walmart? There's not one tank that doesn't have a dead fish in it, and most of the fish look kind of dead to. But how does that effect plants? Are they like, contaminated?

Also, what's the best tank size for cichlids? They look so cool... I think that will be my next tank project after my next betta tank!

Depends on what kind of cichlids you're talking about. There are thousands of species.

And I wouldn't trust plants from Walmart at all, but you could try it with a QT or a dip first. Normally I don't QT or dip plants, but Walmart's tanks are usually nasty.

I would say any cichlid walmart carries is likely a African or a Oscar . I would say a 55 gallon is the minimum but bigger being better

As for the plants I would Qt as suggest or a bleach dip directions can be googled

Yep, I think they were african cichlids? But they were all different colors. I was reading a bit on them last night, and is there a species within the group that has multiple colorings? Because the ones at Walmart were orange, green, albino, and I think a few blue ones?

Walmart tanks are... Nasty. There were tanks of dead fish stuck in the intakes and just to the bottom of tanks. There was actually a few like, fossilized reamains glued to the floor??? How can they let it get like that? I want to go work there so I can fix the tanks....

The reason I end considered Walmart is that's the only place I've seen live plants... And to order them online is a huge shipping cost, and they may arrive dead. But those plants look so sketchy

I buy plants online. I bought almost all the plants in my tank online. Most of them came from an eBay seller named Wetgreenthing. They ship all their plants under 1 fee and some of them came as a buy two get one free deal. Their plants come beautiful, healthy, and are massive! I love them and will keep buying them there. When I set up my Betta tank I'll be buying from that seller. Shipping isn't crazy either. Nothing like fish shipping prices

I know... There was a dead pleco in a tank, and the others had ate it down to the bone except the head... Blergh.

If the plants were in tubes like you see at Petsmart or Petco, then as long as they are fully aquatic - then if Walmart is only option then so be it. But sounds like they are in the tanks... anything the fish have the plants can harbor when you put into your own aquarium. I agree with the others on doing a bleach dip or similar before adding them - if even taking an extra step of having them in a quarantine tank before adding to the final tank.

I'm sorry that Walmart is only option besides shipping them.
