Yes you can plant plants in a UGF. The problem comes in when the roots wind around underneath and clog the area up so the water can't circulate. It also makes it difficult to gravel vac and suck stuff up through the plate.

sounds like it's bad to me, but i think Butterfly was letting you decide if you thought it was bad
