Yes, just make sure rhizome plants have their rhizomes above the sand and be sure to dose fertilizers.

I have been for 3 years successfully. I use fertilizer tabs and I dose. Just went to CO2 recently but most plants were fine in the silica before that.

Anubias can grow in a tank with any substrate because it is not to be planted in the substrate.

Anubias / java fern / moss can be grown with a simple dose of Flourish Comprehensive, but it itself is not a complete fertilizer program capable of sustaining faster growing plants.

Flourish tabs are too expensive, and are mostly inert material with a tiny bit of micro nutrients, instead use Osmocote+ granular fertilizer for inserting into the substrate. Substrate fertilization is not needed in any tank so long as the water column is sufficiently fertilized.

For a complete fertilizer, I would look at the Thrive lineup from Nilocg. Or you can go with a dry fertilizer package and look up PPS-Pro, EI, EI light or go custom if you’re feeling up to it.

But strictly for anubias, Flourish Comprehensive and fish waste should suffice.

in my black diamond blasting sand I use osmocote fertilizer in gel caps that I make my self. I bought a 2lb fertilizer and 250 gel caps, and it cost about $12 and I can still make another 500 if I buy more gel caps.

I do the same think. My Amazon Swords and N. Rubra love it. I also have silica sand.
