How deep do I want the substrate (eco-complete, flourite, etc.) to be in a planted tank?

I currently have it at about 1"-1.5" deep, and don't want to open the second bag (as I can return it still!) if I don't need it.

To have a good anchoring you want between 2"-3" of substrate. The good thing is that the areas that won't be planted you can put an upside down bowl that is about 1" in depth to save on substrate. My buddy does this in the store display tanks.

Thank you!

Do I need to worry about stirring the substrate if I have it planted?
